MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE
Biodegradable. Compostable. Know the difference.
Better packaging decisions start with more precise words.
Start with the environment
“Biodegradable” alone does not describe the conditions needed for breakdown. “Compostable” refers to a defined composting environment. Home and industrial composting are different systems.
Check the exact product
Ask for a current certificate, its holder and the covered finished product. A material certificate is not automatically proof for every bag made from it. Use the issuing body’s catalog to verify the listing.
Match the collection system
Confirm that the receiving organics facility accepts the specific packaging. Keep it out of conventional recycling unless your local operator explicitly instructs otherwise. Never litter.
Put the guide into practice.
